#18 — a spider weaves, weaves

june's recommendation

Hello again,

Not much to tell this month (more news on CABARET IN FLAMES soon, though!) besides the fact that my short story A Bitter Orange Perfume will be reprinted by Small Wonders tomorrow. If you enjoy flash fiction of the SFF variety, check the magazine out!

See you next month,

Love in a Fallen City 🇨🇳 傾城之戀

(Eileen Chang, 1943, trans. Karen S. Kingsbury & Eileen Chang)

A collection of short stories and novellas set in the 1930s/40s Hong Kong and Shanghai. A girl goes to live with her wealthy aunt to continue her education; a tram car stops suddenly in a sealed city; a man reminisces about the two very different women of his life.

While the novella that lends its title to the book is gorgeous, all the stories are charming in their own right, and Chang’s style is entrancing, subtle and atmospheric, with beautiful imagery from start to finish and compelling, complicated characters.
